These incentives will not be around forever and exist to take the sting out of a business initial investment into charging. Installation

Surveys

Each site’s installation requirements are likely to be very different from one to another and there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution in charging. Individual site surveys are the best way to establish an informed idea of the expected costs associated with installation and to help identify the most suitable chargers and operating software for your location and needs.

Site Surveys are increasingly done remotely through specialised Apps and systems and this can be a great way to save money and time whilst still getting the insights you need to make key decisions around your infrastructure investment.

Grid Upgrades

Site Surveys should also establish the available power you currently have at your site (to avoid jeopardizing the other power demands you may have such as ‘kitchens/ lighting/ plant etc.) as this determines how many EV chargers you can comfortably support before you require a grid upgrade.

Grid Upgrades are a request to the power supplier at your site (or DNO) for greater power supply. The reality is that this can be a costly process and require some amount of time and resourcing.

It is worth noting that there are chargers that offer real value in maximising your sites charging capacity through utilising smart software and technology i.e. through load balancing and charger management. These units can postpone the need for upgrades for significant periods as the demands of your EV fleets grow.

Reducing Installation Costs

Establish your Goalposts

A key step in identifying your sites charging strategy is to establish your sites likely requirements from the get-go. Try not just to consider just your requirements today but your likely requirements several years down the road.

Ground works, Let Power Supply Guide You

If you are conscious of cost, charger installs should be planned as close as possible to your power supply as lengthy cabling can represent a large percentage of total costs.

Think Ahead

Whenever ground works are required, ensure that close bays are also cabled so that your site is ‘EV ready’ for when demand increases. This incurs minimal expense compared to repeating ground works every time your charging needs scale and minimises disruption.

Consult Experts

A smart charging solution will ensure your installation investment has been future-proofed and built to scale with total costs minimised. To avoid costly mistakes, shorten your learning curve and minimise disruption to your operations an expert opinion or specialist installation advisor can be worth their weight in gold, advocating for your organisation as you navigate an unfamiliar landscape.
